AFTER three seasons, “Mad Men,” the television series about advertising in the 1960s, has attained a level of popular-culture cachet. There have been magazine cover articles, calendars and an episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” all devoted to it, spoofs on “The Simpsons” and “Saturday Night Live,” and even a “Mad Men” category on “Jeopardy.”

Soon, the show will enter a realm of the pop-culture pantheon that its creator, Matthew Weiner, says has surprised even him: Mattel plans to bring out versions of Barbie and Ken styled after four “Mad Men” characters.

The dolls are part of a premium-price collectors’ series for adults that Mattel calls the Barbie Fashion Model Collection. Although there have been Barbies and Kens based on other TV series, among them “I Love Lucy” and “The X-Files,” the dolls will be the first licensed line for that collection, Mattel says, with a suggested retail price of $74.95 each.

Jon Hamm’s schedule these days is a happy frenzy. During his downtime from “Mad Men,” the Missouri native keeps busy with movie roles.
His latest film, “Stolen,” is a mystery in which he portrays a sullen detective with a missing son. The Sundance hit, co-starring Josh Lucas, opens Friday in New York and is available on demand through IFC.
Three more pictures are on deck for release this year. In “Shrek Forever After,” Hamm will be heard as a handsome ogre named Brogan who assists Princess Fiona. He’s the lawyer for poet Allen Ginsberg in the biopic “Howl.” Plus, Hamm is part of the acting ensemble in Ben Affleck’s sophomore directorial effort, a crime story called “The Town.”
“Having the opportunity to be involved in various projects is nice,” says Hamm, who turns 39 today. “I’ve been unemployed and underemployed for the majority of my career, so it’s great to work on such diverse projects in various genres. From ‘Howl’ to ‘Shrek,’ from a gay-themed art film to a big, animated family comedy, is a pretty wide swath.”
