He Knows You’re Watching
This may be hard to imagine, but Don Draper does a wicked Valley Girl impression. At least, the actor who plays him does. Between scenes as the suave, ultra-reserved 1960s advertising executive on the popular AMC series Mad Men, Jon Hamm is sometimes, like, “Totally,” “Whatever,” and “Omigod!” Or else he’s quoting random lines from Monty Python or bumping into furniture à la Jerry Lewis. It’s partly to lighten things up around a show that’s decidedly serious, but also, as Hamm says, “I can be kind of goofy like that.”
Mad Men, which just began its fourth season, is among the most stylish and intense dramas on television, but its dashing star notes that he’s “able to leave Don Draper at work. I’m quite dissimilar from him in real life.” That’s clear the minute the 39-year-old actor breezes into a restaurant near his home in Los Angeles, wearing a white T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers—definitely not Don’s usual buttoned-up ensemble. “I realize how talented our hair and wardrobe people are every time I have to get dressed on my own,” Hamm says. He certainly laughs more easily than his character does, and when he plunks down his iPhone, up pops a screensaver of Cora, his adorable shepherd mix, wearing plastic Groucho glasses and nose. “She’s a really, really good sport,” he admits.

In this sneak peek at PARADE’s August 1 cover story with Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, the actor talks candidly about his slow ride to the top and reveals the inspiration for his portrayal of ad man Don Draper. Plus, why he and long-time girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt won’t be heading down the aisle anytime soon.
He’s nothing like the character he plays.
“I’m able to leave Don Draper at work. I’m quite dissimilar from him in real life.”
You won’t find him in Don’s usual buttoned-up ensemble.
“I realize how talented our hair and wardrobe people are every time I have to get dressed on my own.”
Hamm spent much of the 1990s driving to auditions that went nowhere and waiting tables to pay rent.
“I drove around in a Volkswagen Rabbit I shared with one of my roommates, and it didn’t have a roof. It doesn’t rain much in L.A., but when it did, it was utterly miserable.”
It took his breakthrough role as creative director of Mad Men’s fictional ad agency for his success to go supernova.
“I loved the original script, but I thought, ‘Who’s going to watch this kind of show on some random cable channel?’”
People now recognize Hamm in the darnedest places.
“Jen and I were in Italy this year and we were looking at Michelangelo’s sculpture of David when we noticed people staring at us and talking about Mad Men. I thought, ‘People, there’s a great work of art here, and it’s the other way.’”
Check out the full interview with Jon Hamm in the Sunday, August 1, issue of PARADE, available in your Sunday newspaper.

27“Mad Men” Draws Mad Ratings in Premiere
Mad Men Mania just keeps growing and growing.
The much-anticipated return on Sunday night was the most-watched episode ever in the show’s four seasons.
More than 2.9 million viewers checked in to the Sunday night premiere episode called “Public Relations,” according to EW.
That was up five percent from last season’s 2.76 million people who watched last season’s debut episode.
Is it any wonder, given the amount of hardware the show pulled in during award season last season? The show took top series in the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, the Writers Guild and the Directors Guild.
And for those who missed it, you can listen to the latest Comedy Death-Ray Radio with Scott Aukerman Ft., Jon Hamm, Rich Sommer, David Koechner.

25Don Draper is back. Which means actor Jon Hamm is back, too. In the week leading up to the premiere, Mad Men fans submitted questions to the actor who here reveals his answers about his favorite scenes, his future as a director and his feelings about the Don Draper Barbie doll.
Q: What do you think are some of [Don Draper's] traits that should be learned and adopted? — Piper
A: Don makes a pretty good case for ambition and for kind of being adaptive, and I think that those things can be good things when done with good intentions… I think he really loves his kids — I think that’s important… What makes him so fascinating to a lot of people is the fact that we really want to like him and yet he’s disappointing in so many ways…
Q: Jon, do people ever assume that you are like Don in real life? (ie a hard drinker and smoker AND philanderer). As a result, do women hit on you as a result of Don’s image? — Spinny Boo Arbierre
A: Women don’t really hit on me… I don’t really put myself out there in that aspect. There’s a pretty significant line of demarcation between Don Draper and my existence in real life.
Q: How would you react if you hear of someone who has a secret so deep as that of Don? — Lucas Olarte
A: I think I would react differently if I was in a relationship with that person than maybe I would if I had only business contact with them or something a little less personal or intimate. I think we saw last season how Betty responded upon finding out this information, which was probably deeper and scarier and weirder than even in her worst nightmare she thought it was going to be. I think it really depends upon how much you invested in believing in this person.
