Random Quote
“Jon is the leader of our little gang. We do defer to him. If there's something that we need to fix, we go to Jon. It's funny, there definitely are a lot of similarities between how Jon and I get along and the relationship between Don and Peggy. But Jon doesn't yell at me as much—thank God. That would be a bit rough.”

Christmas Carol

It might be hard enough to get used to dapper Jon Hamm as an ogre in “Shrek Forever After”– green and hairless.

But the DVD for the film will require an even bigger adjustment. Try Jon Hamm green, hairless and singing Christmas carols.

Hamm was very game to take part in filming the DVD extras for the movie, according to Walt Dohrn, Dreamworks animator and the voice of Rumpelstiltskin. Because the DVD will come out around Christmas, these extras include ogre versions of your favorite Christmas carol.

Hamm was apparently a very enthusiastic ogre singer.

“He belted out the most hilarious Christmas song I had ever heard,” Dohrn tells PopcornBiz. “It was the old playground version of ‘Jingle Bells’ by way of ogres. The gross things that ogres eat proudly.”

“Jon was singing with gusto out of the side of his mouth.”

Dohrn says he was pleased he was not in the booth with Hamm “so I could laugh as hard as I wanted to.”

Out of all the cast of comedians in “Shrek,” Dohrn says he was the most surprised by Hamm’s hilarity. “I know he’s on ’30 Rock’ but you just think of him as this serious ‘Mad Men’ character.”

Director Mike Mitchell says he too was “shocked to see what a great sense of humor Jon has.”

“And he’s a great singer,” says Mitchell. “He’s multi-talented!”

Cabaret

I just found this great article from MIZZOU Magazine. It’s probably the best article I read about his time at Mizzou.

The unknown Jonathan Daniel Hamm cut his acting teeth on productions in MU’s Department of Theatre with Professor Jim Miller as his mentor.

“Jon has the intellect to fill the screen,” Miller says. “He was the most intellectual actor I have had in 30 years of teaching.”

Miller describes Hamm as a throwback to the silver screen’s leading men of the past and “iconically handsome.” He’s a Gary Cooper or Cary Grant in comparison to today’s “leading boys,” Miller says.

“Think of those superstars, including Henry Fonda. They were forceful even when they weren’t doing anything. Jon is a man in the classic sense. He looks mature, he’s a regular guy’s guy, not a narcissist about his looks, and he has talent and depth.”

Shrek Forever After Press Conference

Director Mike Mitchell (also the voice of Butter Pants and several other bit characters) talked about Jon Hamm working on the movie and having a great sense of humor and even recording a song for the DVD. Teresa Cheng said that originally Hamm’s character, Brogan, was named Gnimrahc (Charming spelled backwards). Gnimrahc/Brogan was going to be Prince Charming with a spell cast upon him, getting involved in a romantic triangle with Fiona and Shrek. Hamm even recorded those lines, but Mitchell said that Hamm was so charming and sexy in the role that it hurt the main story of the movie.

“You know, how we’re making it and writing it at the same time and exploring every avenue to tell the best story. And, at one point, Brogan kinda had the make on Fiona and Shrek is like “who is that guy?” And we recorded a lot of lines with Jon Hamm and he was so charming and so engaging that it was, like, hurting our story. You were like, “I want her to be with that guy! He’s so cool and charming and sexy!”"
