Reminder: Jon presents “Tootsie”

Jon Hamm presents Tootsie

The event is sold out.

Sunday, May 2nd, 8pm
The Cinefamily
611 N. Fairfax Ave. Los Angeles, California 90036

The Cinefamily says:
Jon Hamm: he is a man. A Mad Men kind of man. A sexy man. A smart man. And, as those who’ve seen his SNL appearances can testify, a funny man. For May’s Comedy Death-Ray night, Jon’s picked one of the seminal smash comedy hits of the ’80s, one ripe for rediscovery — and one that wasn’t afraid to provide a yin of social relevance (in this case, the maturation of feminism into a new decade) to balance out its absurdist, farcical yang. In Jon’s words: “Tootsie is an adult comedy — that is to say, a comedy made for adults. Not that there is anything wrong with people getting hit in the nuts and ‘bros’ high-fiving each other over bad puns, but this is an exceedingly well-written, well-acted, well-directed comedy that is about something that most adults can relate to, all while couched in a crazy high-concept conceit that makes for a very funny, and surprisingly moving movie.”
Dir. Sydney Pollack, 1982, 35mm, 116 min.

Though he rarely cracks a smile as advertising exec Don Draper on the drama Mad Men, Jon Hamm is becoming appreciated as a talented comedic actor, due to his stints as host of Saturday Night Live and Emmy-nominated guest appearances on 30 Rock. Hamm introduces the comedy classic Tootsie at May’s Comedy Death-Ray — Cinefamily’s monthly show where comics and comedic actors present films that influenced and inspired them. A goofily endearing gender-bender released in 1982, Tootsie remains as irreverently witty as ever.” Karin E. Baker

Conan O’Brien Brings Out Jim Carrey, More Celeb Pals At L.A. Show

Aziz Ansari, Jonah Hill and Jon Hamm also join Team Coco for the Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour.

For seven short months, Conan O’Brien hosted “The Tonight Show” on the Universal Studios back lot. In a full-circle moment on Saturday night, the comedian brought his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour to Universal Studios’ Gibson Amphitheatre, a mere 400 yards from his old stage.

“This is my first time back at Universal Studios since I lost my job,” O’Brien announced to the sold-out crowd, causing the Conan-crazy fans to boo his former employer, NBC. “Don’t boo too loudly. If you listen very carefully, you can hear bad ideas being green-lit.”

Aside from occasional jabs at O’Brien’s old network, the traveling variety show was nothing but a lovefest between TBS’ newest late-night host and his devoted fanbase. O’Brien even brought a few extra-special treats to L.A. (since his celeb pals didn’t have to travel too far to join him onstage), including appearances by Jonah Hill, 2010 MTV Movie Awards host Aziz Ansari and Jim Carrey as Superman.

After lamenting how tough it is to be Conan O’Brien, the funnyman launched into Five for Fighting’s “Superman (It’s Not Easy)” only to be joined in the second verse by Carrey, who emerged from the crowd in red-and-blue tights. The pair hammed it up during the duet, trading over-the-top vocal runs and awkward dance moves.

The real guest-star cavalcade came during the “Walker, Texas Ranger” Lever, a staple from Conan’s late-night shows that (for legal reasons) will now be known as the Chuck Norris Rural Policeman Handle. Ansari, Hill, “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm and “30 Rock” page Jack MacBrayer all took turns pulling the handle to activate ridiculous (and completely real) “Walker” scenes. “I’m just glad I’m not one of the guys who works for NBC pulling the handle,” Hamm quipped, pointing out Ansari’s and MacBrayer’s day jobs on Peacock comedies.

Conan bestie Andy Richter, former “Tonight Show” writer Deon Cole and Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog also got in on the action with bits throughout the two-hour show. Comedian Reggie Watts kick-started the night with 20 ridiculous minutes of accents, beatboxing and unintelligible lyrics.

“HOWL” Heads To Oscilloscope

Howl

Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Academy Award winning documentarians Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s first narrative feature “HOWL.” Starring James Franco as a young Allen Ginsberg, the film depicts how Ginsberg’s seminal work – the poem “HOWL” – broke down societal barriers in the face of an infamous public obscenity trial. It was the opening night film at 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and also screened in competition at the Berlinale. Oscilloscope will release “HOWL” in theaters and VOD on September 24, 2010.

“At O-Scope we love working with passionate, creative filmmakers who make entertaining and meaningful films,” David Fenkel, co-founder of Oscilloscope said in a statement, “and the team behind ‘HOWL’ perfectly fit this profile. They put together a great cast, lead by a performance by James Franco that people will be talking about for years.”

“We’re very happy that ‘HOWL’ has found the perfect home and partners,” Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman added. “Oscilloscope is the coolest company around.”

Also featuring David Strathairn, Jon Hamm, Bob Balaban, Alessandro Nivola, Treat Williams, Mary-Louise Parker and Jeff Daniels, “HOWL” was produced by Elizabeth Redleaf and Christine Kunewa Walker of Werc Werk Works, and Epstein and Friedman. It received a somewhat mixed response.

Random Quote

“Well, in real life, he’s definitely the alpha male. But he’s also not my boss. I mean, we’re peers, you know what I mean. Like, I respect him very much, and he works much longer hours, and I would consider when he’s on set that my demeanor definitely shifts to give him the stage.Whereas, if Jon Hamm’s on set, it’s much more his story line. And it’s a natural thing for us to do because of the relationship on the show, too. That being said, I mean, Jon’s my friend. I really like the guy, and I mean, he’s fucking cool. He never makes anyone feel like – I’ve worked with guys who…Jon is nothing like that. He wouldn’t – I mean, any alpha male status he has is alpha male status that people give him. It’s nothing that he aspires to or demands. It just is what it is.”
